Improving health and wellbeing is something that’s on everyone’s mind during the holiday season, so you’re bound to have a stream of prospects during that time. But, if you want to spend some quality time with your family but also be there for prospects and clients, you need to create ways for prospects to get value without your direct involvement.
In other words, you need to branch out and create some additional income streams.
Why do I need additional income streams?
Health coaching is a fulfilling profession, but it’s financially limiting to when you can work. If you can’t, there’s no income, which makes it difficult to enjoy the holidays. Assess your current business model: If you stop doing one-on-one or group sessions, would your business still be viable?
If the answer is no, it’s time to change this ASAP, get additional income streams, and create services and products that will work even when you can’t. So you can be earning whilst spending time with the family!
For example, you could offer a video course that you create and sell as part of your services. Your clients buy the course and follow it without you needing to be there at every stage. Instead you can provide support to many more clients at the same time whilst they get a better service at their own pace. It’s perfect for those times of the year when you can’t be as active but isn’t completely hands off if your clients need help.
So, let’s get started, here are some of my favourite ways to make income during those super busy times of the year:
We’ll start with the one I already mentioned above, and if you were toying with the idea to offer pre-recorded video courses with your health coaching, you were absolutely on the right track!
Video is in high demand – by 2022, videos will make more than 82% of all internet traffic! Video courses are a convenient format that your clients can fit into their schedule whenever they have the time, without having to wait for you to have a clear schedule.
Start by recording an introductory session or something popular that your clients love and offer it as a free opt-in and see how it does!
The most important thing here is to make sure the courses make sense to your clients and answer their specific needs well. Create additional materials for the course the same way you would do for your usual in-person or live sessions.
For example, for your “healthier eating habits” course, create a reference sheet of good and bad foods for clients, or a checklist where they can track their meals, progress, slip-ups, and other relevant things, or a complete meal plan for a week or month.
These types of courses can be delivered to clients in a variety of ways – for example, you can have a designated delivery system in the form of an online portal, where clients can track their progress easily, and you can keep track of it too.
If you gamify the course a bit, you will provide them with an additional incentive to stick to it. Gamification is the process of adding gaming techniques such as progression, levelling up, and getting progress rewards to motivate clients to stick to your course. It can be applied to any activity that requires your clients to actively participate.
A progress bar is a good example of gamification. Unlocking perks (for example, a discount or free bonus materials from you) as you progress is also a great way to keep clients engaged without your direct involvement.
Top Tip: Remember you’ll need to tweak some of your processes here to accommodate supporting your course students. This could be an online forum, a weekly group virtual session, or even a Facebook Live event. But either way you need to incorporate yourself into their learning experience. After all, it’s your personal branding that drove them to purchase in the first place.
Paywall resource libraries
A resource library is where you can keep all your guides and downloadable materials such as worklists, checklists, and others. The library can become available to those clients who purchase a certain membership tier on your website or even just purchase to gain access to the materials.
Think of these libraries as VIP materials for members who are serious and want to commit. Of course, since they will be paying to gain access to these and other materials, you must make sure they provide tangible value to them and make sense.
Top Tip: Add a video explainer in the resource library so clients know which order to use them in, and what is going to be best for them.
An alternative, and slightly more bespoke option to video courses are customisable programmes that clients can mix and match themselves on an online portal.
Each smaller part would have its own cost, forming the final price when combined. This way, if someone wants a test session or two, they can easily purchase them as a standalone option if they are not ready for predefined, bigger package deals yet.
This also opens up a new opportunity to get them to add more – by activating additional discounts or bonuses with more lessons they add to their custom programme! And it’s perfect for those who aren’t ready to commit or don’t have the budget right now to get a more immediate conversion.
An affiliate programme is also an excellent way to make additional income during the holiday season, but it’s also a great option all year long. Ideally, you want to be an affiliate yourself and offer an affiliate programme to your clients as well.
It includes offering products and services from other brands as part of a partnership, or feature them in your videos, blog posts, guides, and other types of content via your own custom affiliate link on your website.
That link helps keep track of how many people have purchased the products from you. Every time someone buys this way, part of the money will be yours even if the product isn’t.
The fees differ greatly between affiliate programmes, so you can expect to get anywhere between 10% and 70%. Don’t go overboard with affiliate programmes, though. Choose only a few that you love and believe in, and most importantly, that will be useful to your target audience.
You can even try creating an affiliate programme yourself! Your fans and followers, and even other partners, can feature your health coaching services via their own links. Think about the services and products that would make the most sense to include in these programmes: do you have a book you’re selling, or maybe some courses or webinars?
When looking at commission rates, be generous with your affiliates. After all, they closed the deal, so let them keep a lot of the money, but just make sure it’s profitable for you.
Top Tip: When it comes to your own affiliates, products are the least time heavy option for you to offer to others and makes it easier to manage in the beginning.
Automating your processes to increase capacity
If you are creating additional streams of revenue, you want them to be easily accessible and automated so that you don’t have to send new materials whenever someone new purchases your programmes.
For this, you can create a client portal, which will be your hub for everything: from live 1:1 and group sessions to self-service materials in your resource library. Each of your clients will have their own account here where they can securely log in and access the materials they are authorised to – documents, policies, FAQs, worksheets, recipes, or just about anything!
How you set it up is up to you.
For example, you could have a live session tab and self-service tab:
In the live sessions tab, you will keep everything from the…you guessed it…live sessions with that specific client – video recordings, worksheets, FAQs, useful documents, as well as a calendar with upcoming sessions, with options to cancel, reschedule, or request new sessions completely online.
The self-service tab will be a different part of the client portal, where you will put all the programmes, video courses, and other materials that are part of a programme bundle that your clients buy from your service page. They can go through the materials at their own pace without having to wait for a live or in-person session with you. With a client portal, they can get access to your expertise no matter what time of day it is and this frees you up to deal with direct support or client communication.
Streamline repetitive communication
The best part of such additional streams is that you can automate the whole procedure! When your clients sign up to one of your programmes, create a whole welcome routine for them to get familiar with the process.
For all inquiries, prepare answers to send to prospects automatically after they send you a message/email. An immediate response saying thank you and having some information they can go through while they wait for an answer is better than just waiting and wondering.
Make sure your revenue streams are complementary
Even with the automation of your new income streams, you will still have to put in the work – film videos, create checklists, develop meal plans, and make summaries and any other materials you had in mind – so make sure your income streams are compatible.
For example, when creating a meal plan, include some affiliate products that you love and use yourself into the plan. You will be bundling two income streams, and they will work well together and reduce your workload!
